The Need for 360°
Evaluations
Beginning
in the early part of the industrial psychology movement,
organizations began to search for methods that could help managers
perform one of their most difficult tasks: evaluating employee
performance. Because traditional one-on-one performance
evaluations were limited by their subjective nature, favoritism
and “halo” effects, companies began to look for new ways of
meeting one their most important needs.
The solution was the development of what are now called “360°
assessments”. This technique expanded the evaluation process to
include everyone who came in contact with a manager, not just the
managers supervisor. Included in the review were opinions from not
only the boss, but from self reporting by the manager as well as
evaluations by their direct reports and peers.
Since
there were reports from all sides, this style of evaluation was
call “360°”
The
advantages of the system soon became apparent and included:
-
Increased objectivity
in an often subjective process.
-
A wider perspective
because input was solicited from those who work with and for the
individual.
-
Minimization of the
impact of a single observer’s overly biased view.
-
An increase in
perceived accuracy (therefore lending credibility) and the
fairness necessary to gain the support of the person being
evaluated.
Developing
the skills and the methods used by managers has a tremendous
impact on an organization’s productivity. A powerful initiative
for effecting managers is a 360 degree feedback system. The
Profiles Checkpoint 360 degree feedback system has been hailed by
clients for its thoroughness, cost-effectiveness, and long-term
results.
The
CheckPoint 360° surveys 70 specific job skills, which fall into
eight universal management and leadership competencies and 18
skill sets. Multi-rater feedback surveys are completed by
managers, their bosses, their peers, and the people who report to
them. The data are compiled into thorough and concise reports for
managers to see how their job performance is evaluated by the full
circle of people who observe it. CheckPoint 360° reports include
recommendations for professional development to enhance each
manager’s job performance.
The
Profiles CheckPoint 360 System is a powerful three-part solution
for professional development

First,
is an extensive Checkpoint 360 degree survey to provide
managers with multi-rater feedback from those who observe
their performance: their bosses, subordinates, and peers.
This is an important process because increased awareness
motivates managers to change the way they do their jobs. The
experience of participating in our unique 360 degree
feedback system fosters powerful professional development.
The
second part of Checkpoint is an
Organizational Management
Analysis System that alerts top management to potential
managerial problems that can develop when managers’ goals
are not in alignment with the goals of the organization.
Having this information not only encourages professional
development on an individual level, but across the
enterprise. This information strengthens communication and
builds stronger organizations.
The
Profiles SkillBuilder series rounds out the 360 degree
feedback solution and is an organized management and
professional development program that addresses specific
managerial skills identified in the Checkpoint as needing
improvement. It also enables managers to pursue
self-improvement in the areas most essential to improving
their job performance. Consisting of 18 modules, managers
develop and complete a customized personal development plan
using SkillBuilder modules. Unlike many courses and
seminars, SkillBuilder activities are available online and
are integrated into a manager’s daily tasks. Being
self-paced, SkillBuilder modules easily fit into a
manager’s schedule and tangibly accelerate effectiveness
and efficiency.
